Description
The Gent S4-711 is an addressable dual optical and heat sensor for Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and Nano fire alarm panels. Its smoke chamber takes readings at two angles, which the panel compares to help distinguish smoke from dust and steam. A heat element adds temperature sensing in the same head. Ten sensing modes are selectable at commissioning, starting with normal optical sensitivity and Class A1 heat. The sensor draws its power from the loop and includes a short circuit isolator. It fits the separate S4-700 base, with a white ABS housing and red fire LED. The S4-771-S adds an integral sounder.

The S4-711 uses a dual-angle smoke chamber and a thermistor. The optical sensing channels measure forward and backward scatter, on channels 1 and 4, while channel 2 measures heat. The panel compares the two optical readings as a ratio to help separate smoke from dust and steam. The optical system also has an extended dynamic range.
The sensing STATE is a commissioning choice. The ten options are 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12. STATE 0 combines normal optical sensitivity with Class A1 heat. STATE 3 increases optical sensitivity, STATE 8 delays the optical response, and STATE 12 gives heat-only Class A1 detection. Heat classes B, BS and A2S are available in other modes. STATEs 2, 6 and 11 use low optical sensitivity.
S-Quad devices take power from the loop at 35 V to 48 V. This head includes a short circuit isolator. Its Nano load factor is 0.5; Nano allows a maximum of 127 devices on its loop. This maximum is subject to loop loading. Use the Battery Standby and Loop Load calculator to determine the installed device mix, cable length and standby requirement.
S-Quad heads plug into the separately ordered S4-700 base. Mount the base on a metal back box, maintain loop earth continuity and connect earth securely to the box. The base locking peg can secure the head against removal. A locked head needs access to the peg for release. The S4-FLUSH kit provides semi-flush ceiling mounting for the white S-Quad range.
The S-Quad programmable connection supports either a monitored input or an unmonitored output. The default output drives a remote repeat LED without a series resistor. One 13449-01 or SEN-LED remote indicator can connect to a base, with a maximum run of 15 m to the external I/O unit. The head is supplied with a dust cover, which must be removed before commissioning.

What does dual optical sensing add to the S4-711?
The S4-711 takes forward-scatter and backward-scatter readings from its optical chamber. The panel compares those two readings as a ratio, helping it distinguish smoke from dust and steam. That is the optical arrangement used across the S-Quad dual optical range. A thermistor supplies a separate heat reading, so the head combines optical smoke and heat sensing. The S4-710 has a single forward optical channel with heat, while the S4-771-S combines the dual optical and heat arrangement with a sounder.
Does the S4-711 have more than three sensing modes?
Yes. The S4-711 has ten selectable sensing STATEs: 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12. Its factory setting is STATE 0, combining normal optical sensitivity and Class A1 heat. STATE 3 raises optical sensitivity, STATE 8 delays the optical response, and STATE 12 gives Class A1 heat-only detection. Other modes include heat classes B, BS and A2S. How is the S4-711 tested with a smoke aerosol?
Use the panel Test mode for aerosol testing of the S4-711. In that mode, S-Quad dual optical sensors are treated as single-channel optical sensors. This matters because aerosol test particles resemble steam, while normal dual optical processing is designed to reduce unwanted alarms from dust and steam. The S4-711 retains its forward optical, heat and backward optical sensing channels as part of its hardware. Its ordinary detection response is determined by the sensing STATE selected during commissioning.
Does the S4-711 include an alarm sounder?
The S4-711 provides dual optical and heat sensing without an integral sounder, speech output or visual alarm device. The S4-771-S combines dual optical and heat detection with a tone sounder, while the S4-711-V is the voice-sounder version. On the S4-711, sensing channels 1 and 4 carry the two optical readings and channel 2 carries heat. It has a red LED for fire indication and fits the separate S4-700 base. The head also includes a short circuit isolator.
Can the S4-711 use a remote fire indicator?
Yes. The S-Quad programmable connection is set at the factory as an unmonitored output for a remote repeat LED, without a series resistor. One 13449-01 or SEN-LED indicator can be wired to the base, and the cable linking the base and external I/O unit is limited to 15 m. The same connection can instead be configured as a monitored input. The S4-711 itself retains its red fire LED and reports its optical and heat sensing readings to the control panel.
