Description
The Gent S4-34740 beam sensor pair detects smoke across a clear path from 2m to 100m in Vigilon and Nano systems. It has a transmitter with a red lens retainer and a receiver with a black lens retainer. Each head takes its power from the loop and fits a base on an angle or parallel bracket. The brackets and bases are separate from the pair. LEDs on both heads help align the beam, with the final gain set at the panel. The receiver controls the smoke sensitivity and gives the local fire signal. State selection sets the path range and response to a blocked beam. Each head weighs about 105g.

The S4-34740 combines the S4-34741 transmitter and S4-34742 receiver. The two heads face each other across the protected path and connect to the fire alarm loop. Each head needs a bracket with its sensor base: the S4-34741-01 angle bracket or S4-34741-03 parallel bracket. Two bracket and base assemblies are needed for a complete pair, with the type selected for each end.
Receiver states set both sensitivity and the response to sudden obstruction. States 0 and 1 use a 50% signal reduction and an ideal path of 12m to 100m; states 2 and 3 use 25% and 5m to 100m. States 4 and 5 use 10% and 2m to 30m. LPCB approval covers states 0 to 3. State 0 is the factory setting. Day and night settings can be set separately at the receiver.
Alignment uses the LEDs on both heads while the bracket adjusters move each end towards the best signal. Local AutoGain operates on the receiver in pairs that have not been converted for backward compatibility. Finish the process with receiver AutoGain from the panel controls. The receiver gives the local fire indication, and the panel also indicates fire. The S4-34741-50 test cards provide obscuration tests after commissioning, with the card selected for the receiver state.
Vigilon commissioning uses Commissioning Tool V1.26 or later. Nano beam configuration features require Nano Commissioning Tool V2.0.7.1 and panel firmware V2.56 or later. An optional monitored test keyswitch connects to the transmitter on Vigilon systems, with a maximum 15m cable run. Its input must be enabled during commissioning. This keyswitch test is unavailable on pairs converted for backward compatibility.
Each sensor head is 117mm in diameter and 54mm deep, weighs approximately 105g and has a RAL 9010 body colour. The S4 beam range operates from 35V to 41V, with an operating temperature band of -10°C to +50°C. An S4-34741-99 light shield fits the receiver where sunlight or strong light reaches it. The shield locks onto the black lens retainer.

How is the pair aligned during commissioning?
Start with the transmitter and receiver roughly facing each other, then run AutoGain on the receiver at the panel. Activate alignment and adjust the transmitter bracket to improve the green LED signal display. For pairs without backward conversion, run local AutoGain and adjust the receiver. Continue until further adjustment gives no improvement, then finish with receiver AutoGain from the panel controls. The gain relates to the distance between the two heads, so the path length forms part of the alignment setup.
How can the S4-34740 be tested?
After commissioning, the S4-34741-50 test cards obscure the beam to exercise the selected receiver state. Use a 50% card for the fire test in states 0 and 1, or a 25% card in states 2 and 3. Blocking the beam with cardboard for 40 seconds produces a fault in states 0 and 2, but a fire response in states 1 and 3. A fire indication appears at the receiver and at the panel.
When does the pair need a light shield?
A light shield is fitted at the receiver where sunlight or strong light is likely to reach its optical path. The S4-34741-99 shield pushes onto the receiver's black lens retainer and locks into place with a click. It is a receiver accessory and must not be fitted to the transmitter. The shields are supplied in packs of five. The pair still uses its transmitter and receiver on their own bracket and base assemblies, with alignment completed through the panel.
