  • EN 54-23 High Power red VAD with three coverage settingsHigh power is category W-6.7-14, a wall mounted cuboid of 1313 cubic metres at up to 6.7m mounting height. Medium power is W-6.5-12.5 and 1015 cubic metres, low power W-5-9.5 and 451 cubic metres. The figures apply with the VAD commissioned in compliant mode on panel card software at or above the versions in the specification table.
  • Beacon only, without a sounder or voice sounderThis is the visual alarm device on its own. No sounder or voice sounder is fitted, and the unit meets the EN 54-17 short circuit isolator and EN 54-23 visual alarm standards. It must not be counted as an audible warning device; where a position needs both, the same EP enclosure is made as a voice sounder with an integral VAD.
  • One device covers three coverage and loop current optionsThe VAD power setting is selected during commissioning. Maximum loop current and power are 18mA and 630mW at high power, 14mA and 490mW at medium, and 8mA and 280mW at low. The approximate maximum quantity per loop is 44 at high power, 57 at medium and 100 at low, dependent on loop load.
  • Environmentally Protected IP66 enclosureThe Environmentally Protected enclosure is suitable for outdoor locations and harsh internal environments. It mounts on a flat external wall surface with TOP uppermost, uses IP66 cable glands at the two top and one bottom knockouts, and the base carries its own gasket. IP66 installations use the top or bottom cable entries.
  • Loop powered with an integral short circuit isolatorIt runs from the device loop at 35V to 48V through loop in and loop out terminals, with the incoming and outgoing loop screens connected to earth. The isolator meets EN 54-17: Vmax 48V, Vnom 40V, Vmin 24V, VSOmax 16V, VSOmin 8V, ICmax 0.8A, ISmax 1.25A, ILmax 50 microamps, ZCmax 0.13 ohms.
  • Supplied complete, for Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and NanoThe head and back box are supplied with a fitted gasket, earth continuity strap and two M3 x 10mm securing screws; no separate base is needed. It works on Gent Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and Nano systems with the applicable panel and loop software.

Description

The Gent S3EP-VAD-HPR-R is an Environmentally Protected wall mounted visual alarm device with a High Power red flash, for outdoor positions and harsh internal areas, wired to the device loop of a Gent Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus or Nano system. It is a beacon only, without a sounder or voice sounder. Commissioned in compliant mode, high power gives EN 54-23 coverage category W-6.7-14, a cuboid of 1313 cubic metres; medium W-6.5-12.5 and 1015 cubic metres, low W-5-9.5 and 451 cubic metres. The lens flashes with a pulsed output every 2s. It is loop powered, IP66 rated, and has an integral short circuit isolator.

The S3EP-VAD-HPR-R is the red visual alarm device from Gent's Environmentally Protected S-Cubed Mark 3 range. It combines a High Power red VAD with a red body for outdoor locations and harsh internal environments. It works on the Gent Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and Nano addressable panel ranges. The part code reads left to right: S3 is Gent's S-Cubed range, EP the environmentally protected variant, VAD the beacon, HP the High Power VAD class, the third letter R the red flash and the trailing R the red body. The white flash sibling also has a red body.

This unit provides visual warning only, with no sounder or voice sounder fitted. It meets the EN 54-17 short circuit isolator and EN 54-23 visual alarm standards. Where a position needs sound as well as light the same EP enclosure is made as a voice sounder with an integral VAD, and where it needs sound alone the EP sounder is the plain unit.

The EN 54-23 coverage varies with the power setting. High power is category W-6.7-14: a wall mounted device at up to 6.7m mounting height covering a cuboid 14m by 14m, which is 1313 cubic metres. Medium power is W-6.5-12.5 and 1015 cubic metres, low power W-5-9.5 and 451 cubic metres. The minimum mounting height is 2.4m, and coverage is defined at a minimum effective illuminance of 0.4 Lux. Those categories hold with the VAD commissioned in compliant mode on panel card software at or above the versions given below; the same device can be commissioned in non compliant mode as a visual indicator device, which does not meet EN 54-23. VAD siting follows CoP 0001 coverage guidance, with distance factors that vary according to ambient light levels. The lens flashes with a pulsed output every 2s at 0.5Hz. On a Gent panel the sounders and visual alarm devices are synchronised across all the loops of that panel, and synchronisation does not extend across a network of panels.

The unit is loop powered, taking its supply from the device loop at 35V to 48V through loop in and loop out terminals, with the incoming and outgoing loop screens connected to earth. Its integral short circuit isolator meets EN 54-17, with Vmax 48V, Vnom 40V, Vmin 24V, VSOmax 16V, VSOmin 8V, ICmax 0.8A, ISmax 1.25A, ILmax 50 microamps and ZCmax 0.13 ohms. Maximum loop current and power depend on the VAD setting: 18mA and 630mW at high power, 14mA and 490mW at medium and 8mA and 280mW at low, so coverage can be traded against loop loading on site without changing the order code. The approximate maximum quantity per loop for a VAD only device is 44 at high power, 57 at medium and 100 at low (dependent on loop load).

The IP66 enclosure is suitable for outdoor positions and harsh internal areas. Mount the device on a flat external wall surface with TOP uppermost and level it horizontally, use IP66 cable glands at the two top and one bottom knockouts, leave no more than 10cm of tail wire, and use the top or bottom cable entries to retain IP66 protection. Do not flush mount the base, do not scratch the lens, and do not paint the enclosure. The unit is supplied with its head, back box, fitted gasket, earth continuity strap and two M3 x 10mm securing screws. The EP range has no base options, so there is no base to add to the order.

The device is configured during commissioning to suit the site. Vigilon configuration uses the Vigilon Commissioning Tool at V1.30 or higher; on-site changes through that tool require V1.32 or later with loop software V4.48 or later. Compliant VAD operation on EN Vigilon 4-loop and 4-6-loop panels with MCC, and Vigilon Compact with MCB, requires card software V4.52 or later and LPC V4.48 or later. Earlier panel software remains fully compatible with the device, with the VAD limited to low power; the EN 54-23 coverage figures apply only with the supported panel and loop software. On Nano, use MCB V3.12 or later, LP V1.08 or later and the Nano Commissioning Tool V3.0 or later. Nano limits the VAD to low power, giving category W-5-9.5 coverage of 451 cubic metres. The non EP S3-VAD-HPR-R is the same High Power red VAD in the standard indoor enclosure.

FAQs

Does the S3EP-VAD-HPR-R sound as well as flash?

No. This part provides visual warning only, with no sounder or voice sounder fitted. It meets the EN 54-17 short circuit isolator and EN 54-23 visual alarm standards and flashes every 2s at 0.5Hz. Where a position needs sound as well as light, the same EP enclosure is available as a voice sounder with an integral VAD. For audible warning alone, the EP sounder uses the same enclosure without a VAD.

Can the S3EP-VAD-HPR-R be used on a Gent Nano panel?

Yes. All S-Cubed devices with a VAD can be installed in a Gent Nano system, with panel card software at MCB V3.12 or higher and LP V1.08 or higher, configured with the Nano commissioning tool at V3.0 or higher. On Nano the VAD operates at its low power setting only in order to meet EN 54-23, so the coverage to design to is category W-5-9.5, a cuboid of 451 cubic metres, not the high power figure.

Do the visual alarm devices flash in step with each other?

The sounders and visual alarm devices are synchronised across all the loops of one Gent panel, not across a network of panels. The S3EP-VAD-HPR-R gives a pulsed visual output every 2s, at a flash rate of 0.5Hz. It provides visual warning only, with no sounder or voice sounder fitted. The unit is loop powered and works with Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and Nano systems; on Nano, the VAD operates at its low power setting.

How is the S3EP-VAD-HPR-R mounted?

Mount it on a flat external wall with TOP uppermost and level it horizontally. Use IP66 cable glands at the two top and one bottom knockouts, leaving no more than 10cm of tail wire. For IP66 protection, cable entry is through the top or bottom knockouts. The head and back box come with a fitted gasket, earth continuity strap and two M3 x 10mm securing screws. Do not flush mount the base, scratch the lens or paint the enclosure.

What do the high, medium and low power settings change?

With compliant commissioning and the supported panel and loop software, the high setting gives W-6.7-14 coverage of 1313 cubic metres, medium gives W-6.5-12.5 and 1015 cubic metres, and low gives W-5-9.5 and 451 cubic metres. Maximum VAD current and power are 18mA and 630mW at high, 14mA and 490mW at medium, and 8mA and 280mW at low. These are settings of the same S3EP-VAD-HPR-R, so changing the setting does not require a different part.
