Overview
What it is and how it fits the system.
The LT-SEN-MOS assembly is aimed at the earliest stage of a lithium-ion battery failure, the off-gassing phase in which electrolyte solvent vapours first vent. Its off-gas sensor suits all lithium-ion battery form factors and chemistries, and has a lifetime comparable to a typical lithium-ion battery system.
The sensor connects to the interface module, which allows real-time monitoring of sensor status and timely detection of battery electrolyte vapour emissions. Three relay outputs and Modbus/CANbus serial outputs can be used to electrically isolate the battery system and activate the ventilation system. Status indication runs green LED blink at initialisation, green LED steady in normal running, red LED steady on alarm and yellow LED steady for a sensor fault.
Typical uses run from renewables and power utilities energy storage to data centres, telco, industrial sites and institutions relying on uninterrupted power, automotive vehicle test facilities, recycling processes and laboratory safety. Installation and configuration of the system is to be performed by trained suppliers or commissioning parties.
Key features
- Early Off-Gas Detection — LT-SEN-MOS detects hydrogen gas generated during thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries along with the initial venting of battery electrolyte solvent vapours.
- Two Component Assembly — The main assembly pairs the LT-SEN-M off-gas sensor with the LT-SEN-IM-UL interface module, one sensor to each module.
- Detection Threshold And Response — Minimum detection threshold is 10 ppm/second for hydrogen and for electrolyte solvents, with a response time of 5 seconds and fault detection on single cell failure.
- Relay And Serial Outputs — Three relays cover alarm 1, alarm 2 and fault at Max. 30 VDC 2A Max. 125 VAC 0.5 A, alongside MODBUS on RS485 at 9600 and CANBUS at 500K.
- Interface Module Power — The interface module runs on 15 - 32VDC, typically 24VDC, drawing 65mA, Max 1.56W (@ 24VDC).
- Interface Module Size — The interface module measures 140 (L) x 85 (W) x 34 (H) mm.
- Sensor Environmental Limits — The off-gas sensor is rated -40 °C to 50 °C at 5 % to 90 %RH (non-condensing) with a maximum temperature change of 8.6°C/min.
- Broad Battery Compatibility — The off-gas sensor works with all lithium-ion battery form factors and chemistries and has a lifetime comparable to a typical lithium-ion battery system.
Technical overview
LT-SEN-MOS, the Li-ion Tamer Sensor MOS, is an off-gas detection assembly that identifies hydrogen gas generated during thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries. Designed to be plug-and-play, it consists of two primary components, an off-gas sensor (LT-SEN-M) and an interface module (LT-SEN-IM-UL), and picks up the initial venting of battery electrolyte solvent vapours in the off-gassing phase that occurs early in the failure mode of lithium-ion batteries.
The interface module measures 140 (L) x 85 (W) x 34 (H) mm, runs on 15 - 32VDC, typically 24VDC, and draws 65mA, Max 1.56W (@ 24VDC) with its sensor connected; the off-gas sensor itself takes Max. 15 mA (200mW @ 13.2 VDC) and is fed over the RJ45 output at 0.25W (5VDC/ 0.5mA). Each module serves 1 sensor.
Outputs comprise three relays covering alarm 1, alarm 2 and fault, switching Max. 30 VDC 2A Max. 125 VAC 0.5 A, alongside MODBUS on RS485, 2-wire (TX, RX) at 9600 and CANBUS on 2-wire (CANH, CANL) at 500K. Alarm outputs latch until reset or a release command is sent.
Detection begins at 10 ppm/second for hydrogen (H2) and for electrolyte solvents, response time is 5 seconds and fault detection covers single cell failure. The off-gas sensor is rated -40 °C to 50 °C at 5 % to 90 %RH (non-condensing) with a maximum temperature change of 8.6°C/min. Target lifetime is > 10 years. The installation and configuration of the system shall be performed by trained suppliers or commissioning parties.
